In August of 1969 on a small farm in New York state, the music festival that would be known as Woodstock took place. Many remember the festival, the acts, and some of the aftermath. What many do not remember is this happened while the Hong Kong flu (H3N2) was plaguing the world. The flu killed more Americans than died in the Korean and Vietnam wars combined. There was no shutdown. There were no protests. People didn’t social distance and the economy wasn’t destroyed. Americans built heard immunity and became stronger for it.

The contrast with modern day cannot be more striking. While Sweden and Taiwan followed more data driven approaches, most countries decided to lock down and hide. As more data shows that does not work well, it is hard for politicians to admit that they were wrong.

This week has been quite crazy when it comes to news about Sweden. They are coming out of their measured respond to the current pandemic, which was based on data and science. For weeks, critics piled upon Sweden, but their Health minister held firm.

The numbers are in. The data is in. Now the World Health Organization is changed its position on Sweden. As countries come out of lockdown, the Swedish model is the one to follow. America, listen up. You are not getting it right.

There have been many critics of Sweden‘s lack of complete shutdown of the country as many other did. Swedes did participate in social distancing, the ill and the infirm were quarantined away from others, and some businesses closed voluntarily. Sweden chose to pursue herd immunity in a controlled fashion. The critics claimed a catastrophe would await Sweden.

The evidence is still early, but it is showing that Sweden’s approach may have been correct. They do not have near the mortality rate as other countries, their economy did not collapse, their hospitals were not over run, and now life is starting to move back to normalcy. Was Sweden correct all along?
